I photographed the band, Andy Suzuki & The Method, in SoHo at the end of December. They hired me to take some publicity images for them and wanted a sexy, urban feel. I also shot the album artwork for their new EP, The GHOST STORIES, which drops today (check out my past blog post). The World Gold Council has teamed up with the bridal designer, Amsale Aberra, to show the eternal beauty of gold on your wedding day. "Gold Makes it a Marriage" was the theme of the day, as Michael Pace, the head of U.S. jewelry marketing at the World Gold Council and the inspirational designer Amsale Aberra, spoke with editors in the penthouse suite of the Surrey Hotel on Manhattan's Upper East Side. I was hired to create photographs with an editorial feel so the PR firm MSLGroup could distribute the images to magazine and news outlets.

Camp AmeriKids: Summer Session

Camp AmeriKids has been giving Tri-State Area children invected with or affected by HIV/AIDS a chance at a traditional summer camp experience since 1995. Their mission is also to enhance the lives of youth with year-round skill building and a supported transition into adulthood.
I was a counselor for the first time this summer and the experience was life-changing.

Stanford R. Ovshinsky, or Stan, as he prefers to be called, is trying to change the world and the thing is, he might actually do it. He is a scientist and an inventor, and at 88 years old holds hundreds of scientific patents in digital memory, solar energy, battery technology, optical media and solid hydrogen storage. TIME magazine named Stan "Hero for the Planet," he was featured in the documentary Who Killed the Electric Car?, and Stan has been compared to both Einstein and Edison for his scientific achievements and many patents. His newest company, Ovshinsky Innovation, is currently working on a revolutionary new solar technology. This technology will enable a manufacturing process that could make solar photovoltaic products that would generate 100% clean and renewable energy at a cost lower than generation by burning coal.

MS&L: Jane Lynch & Charmin

Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester on Glee, was at the Charmin Restrooms in Times Square to help crown Iris Hill from Alabama as the Queen of the Throne. The two-month nationwide search to find the Charmin Go Nation King or Queen culminated in rounds of physical challenges and trivia. Iris went home with a crown, sceptre and $50,000.

EVA ZEISEL TURNS 104

My grandmother, Eva Zeisel, turned 104 years old on November 13th, 2010. We had a lovely party and dinner with close family and friends. Eva has been designing for about nine decades. We love her very much.

Fleisher's Grass-Fed & Organic Meats: Steer to Steak class

On Sunday, I photographed a steer harvest on a farm in New Paltz, New York. I was invited by Fleisher's Grass-Fed & Organic Meats (I photographed their Edible Garden demo for the New York Botanical Garden). Joshua and Jessica, the founders and owners of Fleisher's invited me to their Steer to Steak class on Sunday, December 5th, 2010. That day I, along with about 20 other participants, watched a Red Devin steer (a castrated, male cow) be slaughtered in what is arguably the most humane way possible. Needless to say it was disturbing to watch, but it was also powerful to bear witness to what so many of us are completely disconnected from, where our food comes from.

I encourage you to read more about Fleisher's and their philosophy. They offer locally sourced meat that is free of hormones and antibiotics from animals raised in a clean and sustainable environment. They pride themselves on using every part of the animal, creating little if any waste. In my opinion, this isn't a trend, it's a movement, and I am honored to help document it and spread the word.

Chef Michael Psilakis, showcases the refined tastes that Greek cuisine can offer at the New York Botanical Garden's Edible Garden exhibit. Psilakis' Anthos is one of only two Greek restaurants in the world with a Michelin star.

Tomato, String Bean, and Artichoke Salad

By: Michael Psilakis, chef and owner, Kefi, and cookbook author

Ingredients: (Serves 4, or more, as part of a larger spread)
1⁄4 pound green beans, ends trimmed
1⁄4 pound yellow wax beans, ends trimmed
1/3 to 1⁄2 cup red wine vinegar and feta vinaigrette
2 tablespoons crumbled feta cheese
4 vine-ripe tomatoes, preferably heirloom, cut into rough wedges
3 pieces artichokes
1⁄2 piece cucumber
2 sprigs spearmint
2 pieces shallot
1 teaspoon dry Greek oregano
1⁄2 small red onion, thinly sliced and separated into rings
6 small, picked sprigs parsley, torn
6 small, picked sprigs dill, torn
16 leaves of fresh mint, torn
Kosher salt
coarsely cracked Black pepper

Instructions
1. Prepare an ice water bath and bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the beans until tender but still snappy, about 3 minutes, then shock them in the ice water bath and swish around. Drain well and dry on a clean towel.
2. In a bowl, combine the beans, vinaigrette, feta, tomatoes, oregano, red onion, cucumber, shallot, artichokes, and torn herbs. Toss well with clean hands. Taste and adjust the seasoning with kosher salt and pepper.
3. If you wish, add toasted chunks of day-old bread, brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and seasoned with sea salt and pepper.

Chili Lobster with Texas Toast

By: Marc Forgione, chef and co-owner, Marc Forgione

4 1⁄2 pound cull lobsters, claws removed
1 cup lobster stock
2 tablespoons sriracha
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
3 tablespoon unsalted butter, cubed
1 tablespoon chopped ginger
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 lime
1 tablespoon mint chiffonade
4 thick slices sourdough bread
2 tablespoons canola oil

Instructions
1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the claws for 5 minutes and let them cool to room temperature. Remove the meat from the claws and knuckles and set aside.
2. Slice the tails (with shells on) into 1-inch pieces. Get a wok or large sauté pan and add canola oil until it is smoking. Add the lobster tails, cook for 1 minute, then add the garlic and ginger and deglaze with lobster stock.
3. Remove the lobster and arrange on 4 plates. Reduce the stock by half, add sriracha, and whisk the butter into the wok piece by piece. Add the soy sauce and a squeeze of a lime then salt and pepper to taste. Add the lobster claws and knuckle meat and finish with mint.
4. Spoon the sauce onto the plated lobster with one claw and knuckle on each plate. Garnish each plate with a slice of grilled toast and some scallion threads.

Cavolo Nero (Black Kale) with Ricotta (Serves 6)

By: Mario Batali, chef and author of Molto Gusto: Easy Italian Cooking Ingredients

1 1⁄2 pounds cavolo nero (also called lacinato, dinosaur, or Tuscan kale) or regular kale
6 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
6 garlic cloves, thickly sliced
1 red finger chile or Serrano chile, thinly sliced
Maldon or other flaky salt
3⁄4 cup fresh ricotta

Instructions
1. Trim the kale, removing the tough stems and ribs, and coarsely chop it.

2. Combine 2 tablespoons of the oil, the garlic, and chile in a large pot, add the kale, and
sauté over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes, until it begins to wilt. Season with salt, add 3⁄4 cup water, cover, and cook until the kale is tender, 15 to 20 minutes. Drain and cool slightly.

3. Meanwhile, put the ricotta in a small bowl and whisk in the remaining 1⁄4 cup oil. If necessary, whisk in up to 2 tablespoons warm water to loosen the consistency. Spread the ricotta on a serving plate, spoon the kale over it, and serve.

Bucatini All’Amatriciana (Serves 6)

By: Mario Batali, chef and author of Molto Gusto: Easy Italian Cooking Ingredients

Kosher salt 1⁄4 cup extra virgin olive oil
4 ounces sliced guanciale or pancetta, or good American bacon, cut into 1⁄2-inch-wide strips
1 medium red onion, halved lengthwise, ends trimmed, and cut lengthwise into 1⁄4-inch-
wide slices
1⁄4 cup tomato paste
1 1⁄2 to 2 teaspoons hot red pepper flakes
3⁄4 cup Pomì strained tomatoes, simmered until reduced by half (or Mario Batali
Amatriciana Pasta Sauce)
1 pound spaghetti
1⁄2 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
Plus extra for serving 1/3 cup coarsely chopped fresh Italian parsley

Instructions
1. Bring 6 quarts of water to a boil in a large pot and add 3 tablespoons kosher salt.
2. Meanwhile, combine the oil, guanciale, and onion in another large pot and cook over
medium-high heat, stirring frequently, until the guanciale is lightly browned and the onion is softened, about 7 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the tomato sauce and remove from the heat.
3. Drop the pasta into the boiling water and cook until just al dente. Drain it, reserving about 1⁄2 cup of the pasta water.
4. Add the pasta and 1⁄4 cup of the reserved pasta water to the guanciale and stir and toss over medium heat until the pasta is well coated. (Add a splash or two more of the reserved pasta water if necessary to loosen the sauce). Stir in the cheese and parsley and serve immediately, with additional grated Parmigiano on the side.

Here are some images from The Joe Donovan Variety Show album shoot. The show is raw, frisky and sexy (see my previous blog post) and we wanted to play on the drama of the characters with the environment and lighting of the location. We shot in a freight elevator and sound studio at a Complete Music.

Person to Person exhibition opening!

Here are some shots of the Person to Person exhibition opening at the Arts Exchange Gallery in White Plains. The opening was a great success! And a personal thank you to everyone who came out to support us! I am particularly proud to be a part of this exhibition. There were over one hundred photographers showing, including: Herb Greene and Fred Stein.

I took this portrait of Jovana, a fashion designer, in her new Harlem apartment. Jovana is strong, feminine and confident. To reinforce these qualities, I contrasted the dark walls and the sleek, modern aesthetic with the turquoise, orange and green pops of color. I wanted the light and colors to help the eye dance around the frame. Believe it or not, Jovana and her husband, Andy, gave birth to a baby girl about a week after this portrait! She is just stunning and was a joy to photograph.

World Economic Forum: Housing for All

The World Economic Forum used a number of my images from Belize to promote its "Housing for All" Project during their annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland this year.  

Here is the official rundown of the project:  

In partnership with Habitat for Humanity, UN-HABITAT, Rockefeller Foundation, the World Bank, CEMEX, Arup, and other major organizations and corporations, "Housing for All" aims to increase awareness about housing issues and solutions among the Forum's community of top business leaders. As an initial step, the Forum launched a set of "Housing for All" Knowledge Cards - a set of 4 x 6 informational cards that serve as a "Housing 101" for businesses to highlight the impacts of housing on important social issues, such as health, education, the economy, and the bottom-line. The cards provide an easy, creative medium to educate the Forum's unique audience and highlight innovative public-private partnership solutions where corporations have "done well by doing good" -e.g. improving their bottom line while also helping low-income populations access housing and basic services. Future stages of the project will explore development of an interactive website, mobile applications, and efforts targeting specific housing issues.

I took this photograph for Catchafire, a new organization that helps industry specialists donate their time and expertise to a non-profit with a cause they believe in. I have been asked to document the heads of the organizations and the volunteers involved with this amazing program. Zoe was a wonderful subject. Her organization, the Women's Education Project, helps women of limited means in South India, pursue their college and career dreams. This was our first portrait session for Catchafire.

Fl-orl-ippi continued...through Mississippi. We had just finished flying on a friend's plane and saw a couple of Navy pilots (above) who were grounded because of a technical malfunction. They hung out with us for a bit and let us take some shots of them.

In July of 2008 I took a personal trip from Perdido, Florida to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana (Fl-orl-ippi) with some good friends. I love being able to share this stuff...(all the shots in this posting were taken in New Orleans).

The shots above and below were taken in New Orleans. It was my first time. I was blown away. We got a chance to talk to some residence who weathered the storm (literally) and one woman let us walk around the garden behind her home.

The woman on the bar (image below) was having way too much fun, but probably not as much fun as her boyfriend with the camera...

John T. Martin (below), Druid and Voodoo Priest. He was behind the desk at the New Orleans Historic Voodoo Museum: the original and only actual Voodoo Museum created in 1972. Behind him is a portrait of Marie Laveau, the 19th century Voodoo Queen of the French Quarter.

St. Louis Cemetery (below) is one of the city's oldest cemeteries and houses the purported tomb of Marie Laveau. We were actually photographed in this cemetery for a NY Times article, "Voodoo and New Orleans: Two Cultures of Permeable Boundaries." An unexpected bonus*

Phoenix House: Recovery Rally

The second annual A&E Recovery Rally took place this past Saturday, September 12th and was a huge success. Over 10,000 people marched from Manhattan to Brooklyn Heights over the Brooklyn Bridge and the rain basically held out! I was hired by Phoenix House to photograph their nearly 1,500 clients, alumni and staffers who formed the largest delegation at the event. Not only was this a celebration of their organization, it was the perfect time to launch their new "wings of hope" logo.

I definitely had my rain gear ready the whole morning. I arrived at Foley Square in Manhattan around 8:15 am and met up with my Phoenix House contact Arleen Kropf. She was fantastic and kept up with me the whole day, helping me identify the important shots, organizing the group shot (yes, all 1,500 of them!), and running back and forth over the Brooklyn Bridge who knows how many times. The rain held out until minutes after the group shot (I was teetering on the top of a ladder to get it) and the day was a huge success.

Here are even more photographs from my personal project at the Joffrey Ballet School in Greenwich Village. I was a student at the Joffrey over 20 years ago and have been photographing there for a little over a year. My ultimate goal is to put on an exhibition when the time is right.

Ballet is about uniformity and precision, yet there is still individuality. The uniformity is reflected in the outfits you are required to wear, how you are told to do your hair, training to achieve perfect movements and positions and, being able to maintain this precision in unison with others. My fascination is in discovering the individual within the group. Everyone is wearing ballet slippers but the styles are all different; everyone is wearing a bun, but it is never made in the same way. The individual is always present even when she chooses to participate in an activity that requires uniformity. When I focus on the details, I start to see the real people.

SOB's, another one of my clients, has recently put together a promotion with a montage of my images. SOB's, also known as Sounds of Brazil, is one of New York City's premier music venues and has been around for over 25 years. I love shooting there because of how intimate the venue is and I'm sure that's what attracts the artists as well. They really get to interact with their fans during the show. A perfect example is my shot of the musician Ayo (bottom photo, right side) where she actually jumped down into the crowd during one of her numbers.

Affinia Hotel: Bide-A-Wee Event

Puppy Power Hour! I had a fun assignment today. Affinia Hotels and Bideawee (one of the country's oldest and most respected animal welfare organizations) hosted the dog days of Summer puppy power hour event at the Affinia Dumont in NYC. Redpoint Marketing/PR organized the whole event and it was a riot to photograph. Dogs of all shapes and sizes mingled during the canine cocktail hour while their owners enjoyed some food and refreshments. The event was to promote the relaunch of Affinia Hotels Jet Set Pet program, which offers in-room amenities for guests and their furry friends.

The shoot was easy enough although I had to work with intermittent showers and the light quickly fading. On top of that it was one of the hottest days so far. I usually don't like using on-camera flash but I used a little fill for this event. And, as always, I was rolling around on the floor getting the head-on angles of our four-legged friends. Not to group them in the same category but when photographing animals and small children it makes a world of difference if you can make it down to their eye-level. Shooting them from above can feel less personal and immediate, but I guess it depends on what you are going for. Either way, don't knock the dance training, it can totally come in handy when contorting your body to get that perfect angle...

New York Times: Fringe Festival

I shot my second assignment for the New York Times and this time I got to party at Cain Luxe for an hour and a half at the opening party for the 13th Annual NY International Fringe Festival. I had writer Erik Piepenburg with me as we weaved our way in and out of the "swarm of [theater] goofballs," as Erik described. Check out the full article, " At the Fringe: Starting With a Party."

I was excited to use my 35mm f 1.4 lens but it was just way too dark in the club. For the non-photography oriented, this lens will allow you to shoot in very low light situations. It was a little disappointing but I hustled to shoot as much as I could in that hour or so and make it work with off-camera flash. I probably shot for a total of 20 minutes and spent the other hour taking down people's information for the caption. It's really amazing how much time that takes up.

Anyway, the hardest part was trying to get candid shots of people. Think about it, I was in the middle of a giant Fringe Festival promotion-fest where people were constantly handing out flyers and cards and trying to get the word out about their various shows. Once they knew I was a photographer with the Times it was all over. And there was no chance of being inconspicuous with a flash in a night club, but all-in-all it was a very fun assignment where I got to be around a ton of creative people partying it up. Could be worse*

Joffrey Ballet School Series

The TWC Calendar was a wonderful project where we created a calendar featuring Time Warner employees as models. The calendar also won for Corporate Design in the Photo District News: Photo Annual 2009. My fabulous creative team worked with: Dan Klores Communications and Time Warner Cable of NY & NJ to put this calendar together.

The Joffrey series is a personal project I am working on at the Joffrey Balet School(where I happened to be a student over 20 years ago) in Greenwich Village.

My winning work will be published in the 2009 IPA Coffee Table Book and is in the running for being a part of the Best in Show exhibition. This is the seventh year for the International Photography Awards, and they have received nearly 18,000 submissions from over 104 countries.

NY Times: MSNBC

I got my first assignment from the New York Times and it was an early one, a 3:45am wake-up call for a 5:30am show. I photographed the MSNBC morning show, "Way Too Early With Willie Geist." Oddly enough, the early start wasn't bad at all. I arrived at 30 Rock at 5:00am and I was the only press there. This meant no having to work around other photographers (always an added bonus) but I did have to be extremely careful around the stage equipment. It is a live show after all and being aware of your surroundings while you photograph is a fine art. This might sound a little odd but I have danced all my life and I swear it helps me be more aware of my body and balance when I work.

I got through NBC security and was escorted up by the PR woman. Upon my arrival the video guys promptly showed me where I could shoot and still be out of the way. Although most of it was conveyed through make-shift sign language because I walked on set just as the show began. Photo tip* some of the juiciest shots happen during commercial break so never put your camera away until you are blocks away from the assignment. Also...always always always try and be early. Always.

Overall the shoot was short and sweet and the perfect first assignment. Needless to say I am ecstatic to have started freelancing for the NY Times, especially in such a crazy economic time.

Sail Boat Ride

I spent the weekend in East Hampton and got the chance to go out on my Aunt and Uncle's boat. They dock in Sag Harbor and have an absolutely gorgeous sail boat. I shot these photographs with a 35 mm at f1.4 (that means a very shallow depth of field). The first photo of Tip is a great example of how using the right depth of field can really draw you into the image and give it a personal feeling. The Canon 35mm f1.4 is definitely one of my favorite lenses to shoot with. I'd love to hear your thoughts about the shallow depth of field, etc...comments are always welcome!

Inspired by Heritage: Exhibition

I shot "Matzoh Factory, Brooklyn" on assignment for the NY Daily News. They sent me to the Chareidim Shmurah Matzoh Bakery in Borough Park, Brooklyn. With the photograph printed large you can make out the reflection of the matzoh assembly line as well as my faint reflection. I was inside the bakery with the children in the hallway pressed up against a window looking inside at the workers. The people on either side of the window were waiting on line to purchase the fresh matzoh.

The experience of photographing in this bakery is why I love doing photojournalism. I got intimate access into new and unfamiliar world. I respected their traditions and covered my arms and hair. Everyone was very pleasant with me but I had to be mindful of where I stood and what I was wearing at all times. I was definitely the only woman wearing pants and the men and women were definitely aware of my presence. But after a little while I blended into the high-paced atmosphere and was able to get this shot.

Shooting at the Matzoh factory was both exhausting and exhilarating. But isn't that the way it always is?

Gay Pride Parade: NYC

Yesterday was the Gay Pride Parade. I now live/grew up in Greenwich Village and have always loved watching this parade go by. In fact it used to go right outside of my house until they moved it to 8th Street. As sad as it was to lose my front row seat, I still go every year and love every second of it. My now 102-year-old grandmother even enjoyed sitting on the sidelines one year. She must have gotten over 200 kisses and hugs that day. Now that was a photo opportunity.

This year I was shooting for The Villager newspaper. The parade starts nice and early but around mid-town so I usually wait until early afternoon when I can hear the music and cheering before I venture outside. Of course I always have to jump over the barricades. Even though I have a press pass, the police are rarely helpful. I actually get a huge kick out of juxtaposing the solemn police officers with the wild parade-goers.

I spent most of my time this year between 5th Ave and Hudson Street (along 8th and Christopher Streets). The energy is up and down as different floats go by. Some are absolutely outrageous ( S&M grandparents) and others a little more subdued and straightforward (family members supporting each other). My fun comes from being surrounded by so many happy people. The photographs that I have attached focus on two men who were so loving toward each other. This is what I love to capture, moments that we can all relate to, no matter how different we are.

NYBG: Martha Stewart & Dan Barber / Edible Garden

One of my favorite clients is the New York Botanical Garden. I highly recommend heading up there for an afternoon (it's really only 30 mins from Grand Central) and just forgetting that you live in a city. You can imagine how much fun it when I get to shoot for them. This time it was the Edible Garden exhibit with special guest speakers including Dan Barber (chef/owner Blue Hill Restaurant) and the one and only Martha Stewart.

I always go with an assistant to help with releases and hold my off-camera flash (essentially a flash on a mono-pod with an umbrella). I really hate using direct flash. Since much of the event was outdoors we used the light mainly to fill in the face shadows, but for this particular shot of Dan and Barbara I specifically looked for some open shade. I knew I would only have seconds with them individually and that it would take some effort to get them together. Luckily they are fans of each other and I had also met Martha a few times before, which definitely helped.

I shot this photo under a beautiful tree with about 10 of Martha's entourage behind me. This woman is 100% in control of absolutely everything every second, she definitely knows what she wants and has no problem making it happen. And you wonder why she is so successful.

I took 6 frames in 11 seconds. No pressure.

Ken Parker: Master Guitar Maker

I have been photographing an incredible guitar maker/designer named Ken Parker. This is one of the personal, long-term projects I am working on and I'm very excited to have met him. Ken is truly an artist, hand crafting and carefully working every inch of his acoustic archtop guitars. He lives and works on South Mountain Road just outside of New City, NY and his studio is just fantastic and jam packed with tools and machines that he has collected over his nearly 40 years of guitar-making. It's incredible to watch him work.

I never really thought of myself as a blogger in the past but I have always enjoyed sharing my work with others and hearing their feedback so I thought I would make it a little more official. I anticipate more photos (exhibitions/projects/awards) and less talk. Although I think most of the fun is behind-the-scenes stuff so I will definitely share some of those stories as well.
